Life is like juggling eggs.
Every morning, someone seems to hand you another egg.
You are a spouse to your life partner, a parent to your children, a caregiver to your ageing parents, an employee to your boss, and occasionally a human being who would like to sit down and drink coffee without someone asking you for something.
Then there are the worries.
Are the children studying enough? Why are they behaving like that? Will there be enough money to pay the bills? Is that pain in my knee something serious? Why is my spouse suddenly so quiet? Did I pay the credit card bill?
And somewhere among all these eggs are your dreams.
You want to run a marathon around Singapore. You want to make love every night to your beautiful princess. You want to do a push-up, clap your hands in mid-air, and land without requiring an ambulance. You want to master a new language. You want to sit at a piano and play like Beethoven instead of searching for Middle C.
Perhaps some of these things will happen.
Perhaps some won't.
You have only so much money, energy and time. Your bucket list keeps growing while your knees quietly submit their resignation letter.
Along the way, some eggs will fall.
You become so busy with work that you neglect your health. You spend so much time taking care of everyone else that you forget yourself. You put a dream aside for "someday", only to discover that someday has a nasty habit of becoming never.
Priorities change. Responsibilities grow. Life gets in the way.
Then one day, perhaps near the end of your life, you may look back and wonder how you managed to stay so busy for so many years while some of the things that mattered most were left undone.
Maybe the answer isn't to become a better juggler.
Maybe it is to decide which eggs are worth catching.
Because you were never going to keep every egg in the air forever.
