Singapore Is Probably the Most Obedient Country in the World
Singaporeans are extremely well-behaved. Possibly Olympic level.
Our rulebook is so thick it could qualify as light reading for National Day.
We don’t litter.
We don’t smoke anywhere we feel like.
We clear our trays after eating.
We don’t eat or drink on the MRT.
Not because someone is watching.
But because somewhere, a sign exists.
If there’s a U-turn slot on the road, we won’t turn unless a sign explicitly blesses the maneuver. The road can be empty. Deserted. Post-apocalyptic. Still, we wait for approval.
Our national philosophy might be this:
If it’s not permitted, don’t even think about it.
It’s 3am.
No cars. No pedestrians. No witnesses.
The traffic light turns red.
We stop.
Not because of police.
Not because of fines.
But because the red light said so.
The only thing watching is a CCTV camera.
And the software inside our heads.
In some countries, freedom means doing what you want.
Here, freedom means doing exactly what the signboard says.
