The MEL Framework: The Easiest Way to Write a Micro-Memoir
Have you ever wanted to write your life story but didn't know where to begin?
Start small.
Write one memory at a time.
I teach a simple framework called MEL.
Moment
Emotion
Lesson
Every good micro-memoir has these three ingredients.
Here's an example.
I was ten when my father taught me to ride a bicycle. He let go without telling me. I pedaled happily until I looked back and saw him standing far behind me. Fear shot through me, and seconds later I crashed into a hedge. My father helped me up with a smile and said, "See? You were riding on your own." That day, I learned that growing up begins when someone who loves you finally lets go.
Now let's identify the MEL.
Moment
A father quietly lets go while teaching his child to ride a bicycle.
Emotion
The child feels joy, then fear, and finally relief.
Lesson
Growing up begins when someone who loves you finally lets go.
Notice that this story isn't just about learning to ride a bicycle.
It is also about discovering what that experience meant.
That's what the Lesson in MEL does. It transforms a personal memory into a life lesson that others can relate to.
Every one of us has moments like this.
One ordinary moment.
One honest emotion.
One meaningful lesson.
That's the MEL Framework.
