A Risk That Paid Off

During my second year of National Service, I made a decision that surprised many people.

I signed on as a regular soldier on a six-year contract.

At that time, it was not a popular career choice among educated young men.

The pay was attractive, but there was a significant risk.

Once I signed the contract, I had little control over my future.

I could have been posted to a physically demanding combat role.

I could have spent my days in the field, under fierce commanders, managing men in difficult and sometimes dangerous conditions.

Instead, I received a lucky break.

I was eventually posted to MINDEF and worked in a clean, air-conditioned office environment.

The hours were regular, and the work was far less physically demanding than many military appointments.

The pay was good, and the job provided stability.

While the outside world experienced economic uncertainty and financial crises, I enjoyed the security of what many called an iron rice bowl.

Looking back, the decision gave me financial independence and eventually enough savings to buy my own home.

Fortune often favors those who are willing to step into uncertainty.
